GiG completes purchase of 80% of African operator 888AFRICA

In short

GiG Software said on 1 October 2026 that it has completed the acquisition of an 80% stake in the African operator 888AFRICA for €16.4 million. 888AFRICA leads the market in Mozambique and holds licensed operations in Angola and Tanzania, and the announcement names no South African operations.

Why it matters in South Africa

This deal does not change anything for a South African player. 888AFRICA is not described as operating in South Africa, and its licences are in other countries. It matters as a sign that international technology and operating groups are putting money into regulated African markets, which is the kind of investment South Africa's own online casino market has not yet attracted because it has no licensing route for it. South African players should keep checking the licence of any operator they use.

What happened

GiG Software Plc, a Malta based business to business iGaming technology company listed in Stockholm, announced on 1 October 2026 that it has completed the purchase of an 80% stake in 888AFRICA. The share purchase agreement was announced on 28 September 2026, and completion followed once all conditions in the agreement were met.

The detail

The total price is €16.4 million. GiG paid €6.1 million on completion, and the remaining €10.3 million is payable in instalments over the following 10 months. GiG describes 888AFRICA as a profitable, high growth business to consumer operator with a market leading position in Mozambique and licensed operations in Angola and Tanzania.

GiG puts the operator's annualised net gaming revenue run rate at about US$50 million. Its chief executive, Richard Carter, called the deal a major step in the group's growth. The trade outlet iGaming AFRIKA, which flagged the story, also reports that 888AFRICA's co-founder and chief executive Christopher Coyne spoke of plans for the markets where the operator is live and for new African markets.

What it means for South African players

Nothing changes for an account, deposit or withdrawal held by a South African player. The three countries named in the announcement are Mozambique, Angola and Tanzania, and South Africa is not one of them.

The story is useful context rather than a change in the rules. South Africa has no licence category for online casino games, so the international companies that buy and build operators in other African countries have no regulated route into the South African casino market. Players here are mostly served by offshore licensed sites, which makes the licence check on our casino review pages and the operator's own site more important, not less.

What to watch next

  • Further instalment payments to the sellers over the next 10 months, and any new African markets that GiG or 888AFRICA announces.
  • How GiG reports 888AFRICA's results once they are part of the group.
  • Whether South Africa's planned gambling reform bill, which the Trade Minister has said should reach Cabinet in late 2026, says anything about online casino licensing.

Gambling is entertainment with a real risk of loss. If it stops being fun, take a break and speak to someone you trust.
