Testing lab GLI approved for New Zealand's new online casino market
Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) has been approved to provide independent testing for New Zealand's newly regulated online casino market, according to a 13 October 2026 trade report. Licence applications are reported to begin this month.
South African players use offshore casinos that advertise third-party testing, but no local regulator checks those claims. New Zealand is building a licensed market with testing built in, which is a useful yardstick for what regulated oversight looks like. It also shows why a testing logo on a casino site is worth checking at the lab's own site, not just taking at face value.
What was reported
Yogonet reported on 13 October 2026 that Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) has been approved to provide independent testing services for New Zealand's regulated online casino gambling market. The approval comes as the country implements its Online Casino Gambling Act 2026.
The report says the Department of Internal Affairs has published Minimum Standards and draft Testing and Monitoring Requirements, and that the licensing process is moving through competitive allocation, with licence applications scheduled to begin this month. We read the trade report only, not the department's own notice, so the details are as reported.
What a testing lab does
Independent labs check that casino software behaves as it claims. In general that covers random number generation, game maths, platform security and whether the rules a player sees match what the software does. A regulator can then require operators to use approved labs and certified games. GLI said it plans to use its experience in other newly regulated markets to help operators understand the technical requirements.
What it means for South African players
Many offshore casinos accepting South African players show lab logos or certificates. Because no South African body licenses online casino games, nobody here verifies those claims for you. If testing matters to you, look for the certificate on the lab's own site and confirm that the game or operator is actually listed. Where we have not checked a casino's claims, our review pages say so rather than guessing.
Independent testing is also not a promise that you will win. Games have a built-in house edge and gambling carries real risk of loss.
