Las Vegas gaming win flat in September while air passengers fall 8 percent
Strip casinos won $693.4 million in September 2026, within 1% of a year earlier, and Nevada as a whole was almost exactly flat at $1.28 billion. Visitor numbers were also flat, but airport traffic fell 8% and hotel room rates dropped.
Las Vegas is a land-based market and its figures do not apply to South African online play. They are still a health check on the global casino industry that supplies many of the games and brands South African players see. Weak travel demand in the United States is one reason big operators push harder into online and international markets, which is where offshore sites aimed at South Africans come from. Nothing here changes the legal position of online casinos in South Africa.
The headline numbers
iGaming Business reported on 29 October, citing the Nevada Gaming Control Board, that Las Vegas Strip gaming revenue was $693.4 million in September, within 1% of the prior-year month. Statewide gaming revenue was about $1.28 billion, also nearly unchanged. Year to date the Strip is running about 1.7% ahead of last year.
Baccarat won $55.4 million on the Strip, roughly 10% more than a year earlier.
Travel is the weak spot
- Visitors were flat at just over 3 million.
- Average daily room rates fell 6% across the area and 10% on the Strip.
- Harry Reid International Airport handled about 4 million passengers, down 8%, and is running 7% behind last year so far.
- International travel was one bright spot, up 6%.
The report links the slump to higher fuel and airfare costs. It quotes MGM's chief executive saying domestic fares are up more than 10% since March and Las Vegas fares more than 40% on last summer.
Other Nevada markets
Results varied. Downtown Las Vegas fell 7.5% and Laughlin fell 16%, while North Las Vegas rose 9%. Reno's gaming revenue slipped 3.5% to about $73 million. Statewide sports betting revenue was flat, with football bets producing $35.5 million, up 7%.
What it means for South African players
For South Africans the main point is context. A slower US land-based market is one reason operators chase online growth, and larger groups are also looking at new regulated markets. That does not make any offshore casino safe or licensed here. Check the review page for any site before you play, and set deposit limits you can afford to lose.
What to watch next
October figures from the Nevada Gaming Control Board will show whether the busy autumn sports and events calendar lifts results as the industry hopes. Operator earnings calls over the coming weeks may also say more about travel demand.
