Finland's state gambling operator plans a Danish launch with Viaplay
Finnish state-owned operator Veikkaus announced on 29 October that it will launch a new consumer brand, Viabet, in Finland and Denmark on 1 July 2027 through a commercial partnership with Viaplay. It is Veikkaus's first consumer gambling operation outside Finland, and it follows the opening of the Finnish market to licensed competition.
This is a European story with no direct link to South African players. It still shows a wider pattern: a former monopoly responding to market opening by moving abroad and teaming up with a sports media brand. South African players see a similar link between sport content and betting in local sponsorship, so the story is a reminder to treat sports-brand tie-ins as marketing and to check an operator's licence before signing up.
What was announced
Veikkaus, Finland's state-owned gambling company, said on 29 October that it has agreed a commercial deal with Viaplay Denmark and Viaplay Finland. The two sides will launch Viabet, a new gaming brand developed, owned and operated by Veikkaus, in both countries on 1 July 2027.
It is the first time Veikkaus has run a consumer-facing gambling brand outside Finland. Until now its international work has run through Fennica Gaming, a business-to-business arm set up in 2022 that supplies technology and services to customers in 21 countries.
What each side brings
According to the company statement, Veikkaus will combine selected Viaplay media content with its own gaming technology, customer experience and responsible gambling expertise. Its sports data and analytics will also be used to add insight to Viaplay's sports coverage. Executives from both companies described the move as a strategic step, and said the aim is a differentiated offer in markets open to competition.
Why now
Veikkaus links the move to the opening of the Finnish money gaming market. Trade outlet iGaming Business reported that the National Police Board said that as of 26 October it had received 79 licence applications and granted 12, with none rejected. Veikkaus has applied but was not among the 12. It keeps its monopoly over lottery, scratchcards and land-based gaming machines when the market opens.
What it means for South African players
Viabet will not be available to South African players, and nothing here changes how South African casinos are licensed. The relevant lesson is practical. A familiar sports or media name on a betting brand tells you nothing about licensing, payout speed or fairness, so read the licence details on a casino's review page, and set deposit limits before you play.
What to watch next
Watch for the Danish licensing steps Viabet needs before July 2027 and for how many operators finally enter Finland. No Danish licence has been announced in the sources reviewed.
