GiG loses its finance chief weeks after closing its 888AFRICA deal

In short

Gaming Innovation Group confirmed that chief financial officer Phil Richards left the company on 2 November 2026, and no successor has been named. He oversaw the purchase of a majority stake in the African operator 888AFRICA, which GiG says gives it ground level insight into several African markets.

Why it matters in South Africa

Nothing changes for a South African player today. The story does not mention South African operations, and a finance director leaving is a business matter, not a licensing or player protection one. It is still worth a line here because it concerns one of the more visible outside investments in African online gambling. South Africa has no licensing route for online casino games, so that kind of investment has gone to other African markets instead. Players here should keep judging any casino by its licence and its record, not by who owns the technology behind it.

What happened

Gaming Innovation Group, known as GiG, a supplier of platform and iGaming technology, has confirmed that its chief financial officer, Phil Richards, left on 2 November 2026. Richards wrote on LinkedIn that October was his final month. He is due to start as chief financial officer at the design and visualisation software company Chaos in December.

The company has not yet named a replacement.

The detail

Richards joined GiG in July 2024. Before that he spent nearly six years in senior finance roles at the betting technology supplier Kambi. GiG says transition arrangements are in place to keep finance, reporting and regulatory oversight running while it searches. Richards stays available during the handover, and the board has started the appointment process.

GiG chief executive Richard Carter thanked him for his part in financial reporting, investor relations and corporate development. During Richards' time at the company, GiG listed on the stock market, narrowed its focus on its platform business and acquired a majority stake in 888AFRICA, an operator with licensed business in Mozambique, Angola and Tanzania.

What it means for South African players

This is a staffing change at a technology supplier, so there is no direct effect on how any casino treats its players. The link to Africa is the 888AFRICA purchase. Richards has described owning a local operator as a way to learn about regulation, player behaviour and payment systems across several African markets, which shows how outside companies are approaching the continent.

South Africa sits outside that picture for online casino games. Under the National Gambling Act no South African operator holds a licence for them, and players here use offshore sites. If you want to understand how licensing and player protection work in practice, read our casino reviews and check the licence details on any site before you deposit. Gambling is entertainment with real financial risk, and it is not a way to make money.

What to watch next
